So clever and heartfelt. Beautiful and honest. And a delightful love letter to NYC of the late nineties and always.

A bit of a trifle that I found on a list of books about time travel (for which I'm a sucker). And I mistook this author's name for one that I like (and whose name is fricking nothing like this author's).
This story is basically a love letter to New York City (specifically, the Upper West Side) and to her father, author Peter Straub (who I do have affection for. He wrote some deliciously scary shit. He was from Milwaukee and included his hometown, disguised, in many of his books.) Peter Straub was dying when he and his daughter talked about a time-travel story about fathers and daughters. And that he was able to read this book is wonderful. The afterword was as impactful as the book's story, maybe more.

It took me a little to get into, but I really enjoyed this story. Alice Stern is turning 40. Her life is okay. Not great, but not terrible. As an only child with a dying father, she is struggling. She is reflecting on what she wants — has she ever truly been happy? Things take an interesting turn when she wakes up the next morning as a 16 year old. Her father is young and healthy — and it gets her thinking — what could she do to change his future?
This was such a beautiful love story. The short chapters made it easy to pick up and put down. I definitely recommend it.

I loved the characters and how they developed. The slight twist at the end wasn't what I wanted, but it was oh so good. The overall meaning of the story was beautiful. And the true story of the author's own dad was incredibly moving. I'd recommend this book to anyone.
