3.5 stars. This series has a lot going for it, so I’ll give this first book the benefit of the doubt. I loved the supernatural academy locale, the world-building, and the overall plot. Who wouldn’t want the scrappy young woman to find out something amazing about her heritage? The supporting characters (especially Ilia and Larissa) were pretty awesome, too.

But I found some parts to be annoying - the insta-love Maddie felt towards Asher, the excessive use of foul language (there were more f-bombs than there should have been), and the graphic sex (once it surfaced). But the plot is what will keep me reading book 2. I just hope it doesn’t veer off course.

Wow wow wow!! This story had my attention from the moment they stepped on campus! It was like I was with them. I could picture it ALL! I am So ready for book two 😍

Basic tropes of classic YA fairy p0rn. Next to none world building, even when compared to other titles of this genre. The heated scenes really aren't worth the effort taken to read them either.

Tried to read after seeing the book had a Netflix adaptation which was also drab but was hoping the book would be better. Disappointed in both. Especially as someone who sees the merits of the traditional tropes and storytelling for this genre. Let's the movement down.

Read this in two nights. Stayed up till 4:30am yesterday getting about halfway through and this finished it tonight at 2am (too busy to read during the day most times). It took me about 40% of the book for my brain to properly pronounce Ilia, after inwardly shouting at myself, trying to avoid the name altogether, and then trying to pretend it just said Leah. I don’t know why, it just took me ages to comprehend. I ADORED hearing about Tyson and Louis!! I miss them :( that was the last JE series I read before this one and I have only read the shadowbeast shifters series before this so most JE work is new to me but apparently this is where to continue! It was such a slow burn but I was interested from the start. I definitely felt a bit of drag and I don’t know why, but most of the time I was enjoying it and excited and my eyes were being naughty skipping ahead down the page any time an intense part came up and I instantly needed to know what was going to happen. I also managed to predict next years hair colour! Don’t know how. Some of the book was predictable but not much and I’m so glad there’s two more, can’t wait to see where it goes and how the characters develop ❤️ (and hopefully more of the compass boys and their mates!)

I started this book as a fluff holiday book and became so addicted I finished the first on one day and the second the next! I am so excited for the third book to release in 2020! It’s got passionate romance, drama, and epic girl power! Just an absolutely amazing series ❤️

This story had so much potential but the writing was seriously god awful. Everything was rushed. The sentence structure had me wanting to cry trying to decipher it (ex: “Axl stood, and leaning over the side of the side boat stared in the water.” WHAT? Like i understand what you’re saying but why that way?) There was so much detail about the most minuscule of things and then no detail at all about important things (or at least things I’d like to know about). Why did she have an instant connection to Larissa? What was the point of the weird friendship between maddi and Simon and the one with Dee? It didn’t even progress into a real friendship. It was just there for what? What was the point of buying a phone when she never even opened the package and just lost it ? What was with all the weird time jumps between like two pages. It was hard to understand what was happening. I want to know more about how the other four Atlanteans came to be better friends with her. Like it all just felt so forced. Then with Ilia and Larissa- I’m all for finding your best girlfriends but all they seemed to do was just get ready together. Like those were the most detailed parts of the whole book. I didn’t even really see the chemistry between Asher and maddi. Like they’re probably fated mates but there was no push or pull or anything. And the one sex scene was seriously confusing. Everything was all over the place. I also feel like the revenge against the two bitches was good but I wanted detail about how they reacted. I didn’t feel any justice just hearing about what was done to them. This had so much potential I hate that it was wasted. I also really hated being in the head of Maddi. She was such a drag.
