An entertaining and well written read that speeds up drastically in the later chapters. I enjoyed the depictions of this distinctly different family in Victorian times and the eccentricities within them all. The March family make for very engaging reading and all of the siblings, with the exception of the more conservatively raised oldest brother, are a delight to spend time with.
It's lightly written, oft covering dark themes with a gentle hand as well as a wry sense of humour. The Victorian expectations and how the March family buck against them and just about get away with it is done well. There's the constantly slightly edged awareness that at some point they are going to go too far and it will all end badly.
The murder plot is slow and almost teasing to begin with but it speeds up in the latter half of the novel and twists and turns with red herrings galore. I wasn't quite as enamoured with it as when I first read it near a decade ago, but the writing style and characters still kept me engaged. I was more aware of how slowly it was moving because I knew where it was going I would suggest.
I am still debating whether the imagery on each chapter page deliberately resembles the feminine organs... judging from others views on the feminism with this series I would anticipate the answer is yes.

I absolutely LOVE Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell series and I've been meaning to read her earlier work for a while now. This is the first I've read outside of that series and it was a pretty big disappointment. I feels like an old first draft to the Speedwell series; it is very similar but the characters have since been refined and are less petulant all around. I strongly recommend skipping this one and starting with A Curious Beginning.
To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate....
This beginning line is what hooked me the first time I read this novel. It has also created a reading binge of Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey Series in 2020. I was flipping through my library recalling how much I enjoyed the series. I opened the first page read that first line and now I am doing the same thing I did the first time I read her series in 2014, bingeing them until her first three books become one novel in my head.
This time around I am listening to the audiobooks to get another experience and I am finding I am enjoying this series more upon my second reading.
Silent in the Grave ★★★★
Silent in the Sanctuary ★★★★★
Silent on the Moor ★★★★★

One of the best books I’ve read this year! Really looking forward to getting the next one from the library so I can enjoy more Julia and Brisbane!
I surprisingly enjoyed reading this book! I don't normally read this genre, but it was for a Goodreads book club, and I read it within a couple of days. I've already started the next book in the series, and I think I will continue reading books by this author. The book needed more sexytime, but it was an interesting story overall.
