A respectable primer to western philosophy. Gives a detailed overview of the important contributions each philosopher laid forth, but not in a way that bogs down the reader. I especially appreciated the biographies of the philosophers themselves and how their environs helped to contribute to their own thoughts and theories.

A book for the uninitiated, this book along with Sophie's World should give an overview of philosophy that developed in Europe to the layman. Searching for a book that does the same for Asia.

Sometimes the sexism, racism, and eurocentrism of the 1920's shines through a little too glaringly for comfort. But, those moments are few and far between, and in between them this is some finely written, crystal clear overview of the world of philosophy. I would recommend to everyone.

An amazing overview of western philosophy in a historical context, written by an author with vast knowledge of both philosophy and history.

The book that transformed, that turned my inner self upside down. This book introduced me to 'mother of all knowledge' i.e. philosophy and it did this so well that changed me for the better. After going through this book there was no turning back.

A brief but clear depiction of selected western philosophers and their most notable theories. One of the first books that helped me understand the diverse complexity of thought and subjects covered throughout philosophy from 500 b.c. or so to 1920 in the Western world. I definitely reccomend to anyone new to philosophy looking for a begginer's reasonably comprehensive guide.
