Felt like this was really struggling with coming to terms with what level of pacing it actually wants. The premise is an inherently very rapid one, but it undoes the urgency of itself with the constant lengthy exposition dumps of flashbacks and what not. I get they're meant to endear you to the characters, but it doesn't particularly work here.

It was very bland and boring to me. I was not a fan of Tremblay's writing it just felt too on the nose. I didn't really care if Nat and Rams survived or not.

This book was good. The premise was very, very cool: super fast human rabies and a pregnant woman with her best friend against the clock. Tremblay is a good writer, who writes diverse characters, and has interesting stories to tell. I just wish this story had been written by someone who has experienced pregnancy. I've read horror written about pregnant people and horror written by people who have been pregnant, and I generally enjoy both but the true depth of potential and horror  always falls short by people lacking the experience themselves. I'm not saying I have any direct complaints about Tremblay 's characters or that he shouldn't have written this story (I'm glad he did), he did well by them, just was not someone who I think could have ever really met the potential this story had. I'm still glad he wrote it, I enjoyed it, and will continue to read and enjoy his books.

Beautifully written, rapid and downright scary. I loved both of our main characters. I am genuinely glad that I live somewhere that doesn't resemble the setting of this book in the slightest because otherwise I think I'd be having nightmares.

Cannot believe how accurately this book accidentally predicted the early stages of the Covid pandemic. It seems ridiculous to look back on now, but at the time it felt like a horror book (like this book) acted out in real time.
