good true crime deep dive. feel awful for those poor women- hope to see LISK caught in my lifetime.
It’s likely easier for a narrative to be victim rather than perpetrator centered when a case is unsolved, but this approach is important for the entire true crime genre nevertheless. While the terminology is outdated and the author tends to discuss class and race anecdotally rather than analytically, this book is certainly worth the read. Maybe it could have done with a bit of reorganization, too. Gut feeling: definitely Hackett.

This book was an interesting account of the victims of the Long Island serial killer. Most of the book revolves around the women's lives growing up and how they ended up working as escorts. Their families are described in detail, as well as their motivations. I was hoping for more information about the actual criminal investigation, but Robert Kolker seemed to have little of that. He dove in to a lot of the conspiracy theories online, which I thought was a bit of a waste of time. I will say that the stories of these girls and how they ended up where they did was intriguing, but the book as a whole left me wanting.
More like a 3.5
The book had some strong points and was certainly interesting but it also went on and on about unnecessary details. Also, I listened to it and the reader paused in weird spots.

Very detailed look at the Long Island Serial Killer case. Having spent time there was the real draw besides the recommendation from CWO.
Most of these women’s lives were tragic before the ultimate tragedy of being victims. We need more family planning services and education in our society. Way too many having children when neither parent can even care for themselves. This cycle of dysfunction seems to repeat over and over and that was one of the hardest things to hear.
