Kolker is so good at narrative nonfiction. I'll definitely be checking in on this case.

I'm glad these girls have a voice out there. A sad, unresolved story. Reading about family dynamics is always interesting and you get a lot of that here.
I liked this book for exactly what it was, a book that humanizes the victims, for focusing on they were, who their families were and not just focusing solely on what they did as a living. Showing us that, as people, their cases deserved far more care and consideration when they first went missing and after Shannan Gilbert’s call to the police.
If you are looking for a book Rich in Crime scene and investigative details, you are not going to get that here, the case is still open and as such, those details are not readily available.
It’s still a great book that tells the story of a horrific group of crimes and lends insight into to the world of escorts.

I thought this book was well done and interesting but it just didn’t hold my interest as much as I thought it would.

- trigger warnings: drug use, murder, rape, addiction, sex work
- 3.5 stars
- the subject matter was INTENSE (most true crime books are, of course) but this is one that was really really hard to read at times
- i'm not the most comfortable reading about addiction (in fiction or non-fiction) and i need to remember that going forward
- what i enjoyed most about this book was that it focused SO MUCH on the victims - quite literally the entire first half of this book is about each victim and how they grew up/what their family life was like all the way up until they disappeared
- the second half is most of the facts about the case, including when they find the victims and all about the area in new york where this takes place
- i learned a lot about this case that i pretty much had no other information about beforehand so i'm glad i read this
- i did like that this book also focused on the families and what their lives were like following the tragedies of their family members disappearing/being murdered and i thought there were some really nice discussions about sex work/the lack of attention that is g iven to sex workers who experience violence by law enforcement and/or society
- if you like to read true crime books, i'd say give this one a try

Great true crime. Robert Kolker does a good job of introducing the characters. This is a really intimate book about five victims and the friends and family they left behind when they went missing. The five victims in this book all happen to be sex workers. This is a very humanizing view that shows both the hardships that come with their life styles and also how each of these women were much more than just their job.
The book did get a little bogged down for me in the second half. I appreciate the full picture of the lives, murders, and investigations but there were so many characters that it was difficult to keep track at times. There are a lot of characters in this book.
