I read this as part of my goal to read all the newbery award winning books. It is simple but well written and outlines a moral dilemma an 11 year old has to face regarding the dog he has grown to love. It dealt well with asking the question of what’s right and how to make the right decision. A quick and easy read.

11 year old boy deals with lying and animal cruelty. Not for Core children.

Read this because my fourth graders will soon be reading it, and I absolutely love the message it portrays. It's realistic because in the end enemies aren't immediately buddy-buddy, but instead are at an understanding. Hard work and perseverance can sometimes pay off, and as is learned through Judd sometimes people can be seen as "salty" and not altogether desirable for a reason.
