I’m glad I read it because from what I understand, this book was one of the first novels, and it’s always interesting to take a peak at the values and culture of 300 years ago.

But MY GOODNESS was this book a doozy. There was SO much, what can only be described as meandering. Did they not know how to pick a subject??????? It was spaghetti writing. One moment talking about Robinson’s gripe w God, and all of a sudden talking about the very specifics of how to grow corn for the next 10 years, and suddenly we pick right back up to his gripe with God in “present” day.

I didn’t really care for the amount of detail he went into how he survived.

It was quite interesting seeing how prevalent the “white man savior” complex was. Friday was a simple minded Indian who loved being taught, and learned how to be “civilized.” It was even more interesting seeing Daniel try to give an anti-racism message stating that the Spanish were extremely wrong in how they treated the Indians in their massacre. And now Indians were people too BUT they had to be civilized and educated. You would THINK that Friday, growing up in the Americas, would know a lot more about how to survive and live off the land. But NOPE, he was just continually impressed and indebted to white man for teaching him the civilized and better way to survive. Also, Indians were constantly called savages.

I will never read this book again. It was boring, and I was so grateful to finish. I’m glad I read it once so I could better understand the “white man savior” complex of that time.

Also, this will give me 5 stars in my “50 books to read” reading challenge. So it’s ALL worth it

A selfish and racist mc. I can see that the book is trying to portray how a good christian should behave, but it really shows how selfish and despicable christians can be.
Even though he is miserable when he is forced into slavery, he has no problem selling other people into slavery, or owning slaves.
. I kept thinking that him getting stranded was a good thing to happen for the rest of humanity.
