I read this one because I thought I should - it's one of English's earliest novels, it started a whole sub-genre of novels, and gosh darn it, it was sitting on the bookshelf.
Perhaps it's a bit over-written for modern tastes (that is, melodramatic and almost Gothic), but it's still a fun read, and it's interesting to see how real the Protestants vs. Catholics, and both of them versus those hateful infidels, was in the daily lives of people then.

Oh, Robinson Crusoe was boring, too boring to actually finish though I sure tried to keep going. I can see where in it's day, it would have been exciting, but the endless rambling and page after page of nothing much really happening was more than I could take.

The writing style was fine for me, I didn't get totally bored and quit even though it was repetitive, but I dislike the main character. He kills animals for the fun of it even when it's against his best interest of survival, he is absolutely fine with slavery as an institution even when he is debating his morals and his character, he bashes the Spanish for their treatment of the native people in their colonization then does the exact same in his own turn, and he comes to the conclusion that murdering people is against God's will, but sees not one issue with commanding others to kill and supplying them with the means.

I understand why this book is important, but damn it's hard to get through
