A secluded country house filled to the brim with resentful relatives, a missing Santa suit, a murder in a locked room…The Santa Klaus Murder is great fun, despite the occasionally tedious narrative and the novel’s overall subdued mood. The story is told via several shifting viewpoints, first in written testimonies from suspects and then in the detective’s notes. I actually enjoy this literary device; it’s interesting to follow the same events from differing perspectives. Characters aren’t charismatic but aren’t cardboard either. The plot holds little suspense and the mystery itself is a bit ho-hum. Despite this, The Santa Klaus Murder was quite entertaining. Not necessarily something to finish in one sitting, but a good choice for some light holiday reading over a handful of days. The novel isn’t overly exciting or even all that impactful. It does, though, possess a quiet charm. Best if read while sitting in a comfy chair and sipping hot tea on a bitter December night.
