i cannot pick a rating. 3.9 ⭐️.
the doctor and the mermaid were so,, i have no words for their connection but i loved it.
though, i might not have a flawless literary english vocabulary, but the words used were so fucking rare and weird and convoluted that i like couldn’t keep reading at the pace i wanted, i couldn’t even google all the words i didn’t know, i wouldn’t have finished the book.
these characters and setting and plotlines were so unexpected and creative, i love.
i was just along for the ride honestly.

I'm gonna take the opinion that is partly a retelling of the little mermaid and I'm obsessed with the darkness and gore of this. Especially the last part. I thought the epilogue was also very sweet

Gorgeous, evocative and absolutely gore soaked. The terror and intimacy of consuming the other. Deep world building that trusts the audience.

Gory, lyrical, gorgeous- almost gave up about halfway in as found it a bit difficult to follow, but worth persevering through

Didn't know I needed this reimagining of The Little Mermaid, but I most certainly did! At the center of a tale dripping in blood and violent rituals of making and unmaking is a love story of sorts. Khaw continues to use beautiful prose to describe horrific - and ultimately human - things.
