A somewhat scattered follow up to "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" that is relentlessly depressing and tramples the meager victories of the previous book with the harsh reality of how insidious the systemic racism was in that time. Worth giving to older children but more YA than its predecessor.

The series should be taught in every school to show the human side of segregation and how hard life was. It also shows the love and endurance in the family. Stacie changes the most in this book but still true to the character developed in the other books. Casie also grows but stays true to her original characterization.

Fun(ny) fact(s): Summer reading challenge Bingo with the Dayspring youth #9: a young adult novel! I started reading this one while in A&E (Accidents and Emergencies, what we call the ER) at 11 PM.
Favorite quote/image: "I wanted to help him if he needed me but at the same time I felt somewhat shy of him. I couldn't get over how adultlike he had become, and that bothered me. It bothered me as well that there was a large chunk in his life now that I could never share. But I guessed there was nothing I could do about that, that it was all a part of that thing called change." (pg. 387)
Honorable mention: "Got a great big empty spot that aches all the time and can't nothing fill it 'cept for Stacey to come home? Well, I know it 'cause I got it myself. We all got it. We all part of one body in this family, and with Stacey gone, we just ain't whole. I know that. But till he do come back, we just gotta have to keep on being strong and we gonna have to support each other and stick together in this thing, 'cause we all going through the same hurt and worry." (pg. 293)
Why: Because Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is one of my all time favorite childhood books, I also have continued to read the Logan family saga with some of the other books in the series as I can find them. As the immediate sequel, this book continues to explore Cassie's development and her experience in the Jim Crow South. While the book does explore some of the direct consequences of its predecessor and continues to tackle themes such as family, racism, and economic distress, it feels less focused and resolved than the others, but is still a very worthy addition to the series.
