This was wholesome. I'm glad everyone else came around to their relationship in the end. The whole thing about little twelve-year-old Abel saying he was going to marry Madigan one day tying into the epilogue was super cute.

Details: Fixed POV (Abel), first-person, past tense
Favourite character: Abel
Happy ending?: Yes
Other content warnings: A threesome involving the MCs later on in the story - it didn't detract from the main relationship at all IMO and fit well with all three characters and their dynamic.

Favourite quotes:
“Adeline!” Dad hollered from the hallway. “Someone just called me gorgeous. I’m leaving you.”

What the fuck? I looked at Mom, who snorted and asked who Dad was leaving her for, and then I frowned toward the hallway.

“No, the correct response is ‘I promise to call you gorgeous more often,’” Dad muttered. When he appeared in the doorway, the relief that hit me almost bowled me over. It was Gray. Holy fuck, Gray was here. It felt like I could finally breathe. “Take a seat, kid,” he told my buddy. “You can probably eat.”

“Hi, honey.” Mom smiled at Gray. “Are you sure you wanna be stuck with him?”

“Not even a little,” he replied with wide eyes. “Remind me never to address him as gorgeous again.”

At Dad’s scowl, Gray added, “I’m sorry, you’re just a bit too high maintenance for me, Mr. H.”

“I’m easy as fuck,” Dad argued.

“Of course you are, you sexy beast.” Mom was humoring him. “Easiest lay I ever had.”

“All I heard was sexy beast.”

Lyn snickered and grabbed her glass of milk. “Abel has penises on his computer.”

“Oh my God, don’t go through my shit!” I widened my eyes, mortification flooding me. My sister’s comment started mayhem in the kitchen between my parents; there was a lecture from Mom on privacy, bitching from Dad, and I couldn’t face Madigan to see his reaction. Instead, I pushed a laughing Gray out into the hallway and toward the stairs.

“Do you wanna watch penises together?” he asked over his shoulder.

Four a.m. was for broken hearts and fools.

For as much as I depended on order and a structured life, fire was irresistible and indisputably my favorite toy to play with.

“You shouldn’t have come here, Abel.”

I gulped while he caged me in, his presence immense and intimidating, yet he touched me as if I were fragile. Hands framing my face, shifting upward until his fingers disappeared into my hair. The beanie dropped to the floor. I realized my eyes were screwed shut when I felt the ghosting touch of his lips at my temple. Heat suddenly exploded between us, causing my skin to flush.

“Why?” I croaked.

He drew in a breath through his nose, then slowly grazed his teeth along my jaw. My knees nearly caved. “Because I don’t trust myself.” His voice was a low, gravelly rumble and had the same effect as fire. I turned liquid, and he had to hold me up. “My sweet trouble…” he whispered against my skin. “I can’t fucking stay away from you anymore.”

It was a good time to notice there was a child in the back seat. What the fuck? The shock came to me slowly, as if I couldn’t believe it at first. There was actually a kid there. A little girl was strapped in tight, watching me with a curious expression.

“Dude.” I eased away. “I don’t wanna alarm you, but there’s a little person in the back seat.”

“Jesus.” The word left him in a whoosh, and he ran a hand through his hair, knocking off his cap in the process. “Are you—you’re actually—I mean—Madigan.”

I quickly grew antsy and impatient. “Yes, Jesse. Are you gonna say something or just sit there and stutter?”

“I’m gonna sit here and stutter,” he snapped.

“Can I assume changing this bullshit music into something better is outta the question?”

What. The. Fuck?

“It’s Britney, bitch,” Gray and I barked out, insulted.

“To each their own, but I’m kinda addicted to what we have. It’s Mad and Abel against the world, isn’t it?”

“Yes.” And I joked, “With a small window open for Gray?”

“Very small,” he said and kissed me, “but significant nonetheless.”

“Can we get a pet too? I strongly believe it would complete our little family.”

He looked like he was trying not to laugh. “You strongly believe that, huh?”

“Very strongly.” I nodded sagely.
