I didn't realize that this book was Mr. King's response to his Bachman pen name being outed. Of course, the fact that it's about a writer whose pen name comes to life made that revelation not too surprising.

The story didn't connect with me as well as some of his others. But I enjoyed it just the same. It had all of the gross scary things, all of the folksy Downeast dialect, and even all of the great character building I'm used to. This book also reminded me of a favorite writing device Mr. King. He says something happens and then backs up and explains the events leading up to it or explains the backstory of one of the characters, only then does he have the characters react to the event. It's a clever way of speeding up the reading. I found myself speed reading through the explanation so that I wouldn't forget the event he was talking about.

All in all, it was a good, if not great, read.

This is a book in which the concept/premise was significantly more interesting than the execution, but that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the book, because I found myself completely absorbed in the cat-and-mouse game at play between Thad Beaumont and George Stark. However, while there were moments that hinted at the deeper themes at play in the idea of a writer’s pseudonym taking on a fully separate identity, both literally in the case of this story and symbolically for the writer who created it, the novel as a whole never focused on these as much as I had hoped it would going into reading. Overall, this was a fun ride, but one that falls solidly in the middle of the pack in terms of King stories for me.

I just love it when King writes about writers. You're bound to get an extra level of meta whenever it happens. This book was King's way of dealing with his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. Dark Half tells the story of a famous writer who decides to stop writing under his pseudonym in order to focus on "mature" writing. But murder happens and everything seems that a work of fiction was alive. Or is it? This book was a treat to read and it's one of his lesser known works.

Unlike some of King’s other books where you have to keep turning the pages to figure out what’s going on because you’re drawn into the story and you just have to know, I saw the plot of this one coming a mile away.
