Texas Destiny

My favorite out of the trilogy!

This was a really low angst, sweet historical. Amelia is a mail order bride. However, her fiance got hurt, and he sent his scarred brother to pick her up. This was a forced proximity, road trip romance. They have a long journey to get to his brother's ranch, and they face some dangers. They fall in love, but Houston doesn't feel like he is good enough and wants her to be with his brother.

I liked how the brother was likable and not made into a villain or jerk character. I felt their connection and enjoyed this romance.

I was shocked at how there was zero steam in this. Loraine Heath usually brings the sex or steam. Nothing happens till the very end of the book, which was kind of disappointing, but it was still a good book.

Was it my favorite story? No, but the audiobook improved its rating. The narrator did a great job giving the characters, especially Huston, a kinder tone than I was reading in my head. I’m glad I made the switch.

Huston had a lot of self worth issues and guilt that he needed to process, and he made decisions for the FMC because he thought he knew what she needed more than she did (a pet peeve of mine). I get it, he’s a sullen, battle hardened soldier with a past, but, eh, not too impressed. Work through your stuff, man. A lot of this conflict could’ve been avoided if you just used your words and talked to people instead of bottling it up and becoming a hermit.

Personally, I’m not a fan of love triangles or woe-is-me pining, and this book had both.

I knew I was going into a story set in the 1870s, but it still threw me for a loop when both of the MCs ended up being confederate sympathizers. I should’ve been prepared. The book is set in Texas and the FMC (Amelia) is from Georgia, but it still caught me off guard.

Memorable quote:
“I’ve got a one-room cabin, a few horses, and a dream that’s so small it won’t even cover your palm. But it sure seems a lot bigger when you’re beside me.” The moonlight streaming through the window shimmered off the tears trailing along her cheeks.
“I’ve always wanted a dream that I could hold in the palm of my hand,” she said quietly.

Interesting, I don't think I've read about riled up Confederate protagonists in a historical romance before

Cute story if you’re okay with characters being slave owners and missing how Texas was before the civil war.

This started off great, but then went downhill in the second half and was way too drawn out at the end.

The first half was 5 stars and the second half was 2 stars 😭 overall it’s 2.5 because lord I was tested beyond my capabilities of reason.

In the worst terms possible I went from wanting to swallow him to wanting to swallow a land mine 😔

Also we were robbed of an eyepatch cover!! Rude as hell

Bonus points for sexy snake bite

An enjoyable read with likeable characters, although heroine Amelia is perhaps a little too saintly. Houston makes a fine tortured hero, and I'm interested in hearing Dallas and Austin's stories, so I'll definitely be reading Texas Glory and Texas Splendor sometime in the near future.

In general a good story, but it didn’t captivate me and I struggled with the beginning.
