I have never read a historical romance set in the American West, and I object to Texas generally (they elected Greg Abbott and Ted Cruz, OK?), but wow did I love this book.
Houston Leigh and Amelia Carson are so cute together, a grumpy cowboy and his sunshine. (But not an annoyingly perky sunshine, thank goodness.) Their three-week road trip from Fort Worth to The Middle of Nowhere, Texas, has chemistry to spare, plus plenty of cool events like a failed river crossing and a stampede of wild horses.
They finally make it to the home of Dallas (yes), Houston’s brother and, oops! Amelia’s betrothed. What happens next isn’t predictable, and it’s all written in Heath’s clear prose. She is so good at describing a scene; her writing in this book felt cinematic.
Despite the five stars, I had some confused feelings unrelated to the actual story. For one, Amelia’s family owned a plantation. After the war, a Northerner took it over and let Amelia and her mom serve him. Houston is AGHAST when he hears that the man moved them into the slave quarters. Because they’re not good enough for white folks, obv.
Similarly, our hero(s) were Confederate soldiers. I let it slide because Heath didn’t seem to write with an overtly pro-South lens; her writing just showed us that war is hell whatever side you’re on.
Anyway, I’m off to find some HEAs for Dallas and, yes, Austin.

Any book I feel the urge to read more than once has to get 5 stars. I've read this one at least 3 times so far.

A pretty okay romance. It did start out sweet, and I’m glad she loved him and thought he was beautiful even though he couldn’t agree. I do always like it when two protagonists dream together, but the lack of communication in this was .. a little astounding. But I am SO annoyed, that he was too dumb to admit to her he loved her before she married his brother!!! What???

4.5 rounded to 5. Houston is one of my all time favorite heroes.
