My favorite birthday gift this year was a copy of Me & Mama, from my own mama who - just like this story's sweet narrator - is the center of my universe. This one is a treasure.

This is a heartwarming book that reflects on the strong bond between a young daughter and her mother. I loved the word choice throughout the book, as the daughter seems to be telling the story. The words and quotes that she chooses to use reflect her admiration for her mother, which is something that I really enjoyed being evident while reading this book.
Oh, how this book pulled at my heart! It is an adorable story, told from the little girl’s perspective, about spending a rainy day with her Mama. She shares about all the similarities she has with her Mama who she aspires to, and how they are still different at the same time. For example, the differences in their toothbrush sizes and the cups they drink from. The descriptions are lovely, and they make you feel that you are there watching this special bond between mother and daughter bloom from the drizzling showers. This book shared how sacred those small, quiet moments are.
If you are a Mama to a daughter I highly recommend this book. The author did a phenomenal job with both the illustrations and the text. The artwork is playful and helps the reader to see things from the mind of a child. It is absolutely stunning! The part about the matching dresses was very special to me, as my daughter and I wore matching striped dresses on Mother’s Day, and it was the first one where I had a baby to hold.
This is a phenomenal book celebrating the relationship between a mother and daughter.

A charming story of a girl and her mother. I love how the front and back covers are them playing peek-a-boo with the reader. There are certain universal truths at work here - as a mom myself, I adored seeing a cup just like my daughter’s in the illustration and then the moment when the daughter brushes her mother’s hair is a moment that also happens so much in our house. The story at the end felt rushed - so much is centered around going out in the rain with her mother and then she reflects on the day with her papa and sister and it feels just a bit off.

I thought this was a sweet book of exploration, magical mini poems, and lovely illustrations. I fell head over heels for one of the pages that talks about moss growing in pavement cracks... It's green velvet
The day may seem completely normal — just an ordinary day with a young girl and her mother waking up together. Before the girl’s brother and father wake up, Mama and the young girl brush their teeth, shower, get dressed, eat some breakfast, fix their hair, and splash outside in the rain before meeting up with her little brother and Papa. This day may seem mundane, but there’s clearly beauty, bonding, and patience. The painted artwork is incredibly gorgeous!
I also listened to this interview of Cozbi A. Cabrera on Youtube and it shared a great deal about her artwork, illustrating experiences, and finally her beginning to write her own stories. I loved Cabrera’s sharing of how (and why) she submitted her first children’s stories. I highly recommend both the book and her video interview. Congratulations to Cozbi A. Cabrera for being awarded a 2021 Caldecott Honor!

Mama greets the little girl who narrates this story when she comes down early in the morning. The others are still sleeping on the rainy morning. They decide to head outside into the rain together. First they must get ready with drinks from their cups, teeth brushing, showers and hair combing. Then it’s time for breakfast and barrettes in their hair. They head out into the rainy morning with boots, umbrellas and raincoats. Max, the dog, doesn’t need any of those things. Together they sing and splash. In the evening, there are stories, laughter and cozy blankets that lead to dreams filled with moments from their day together.
My summary above skims the surface of this picture book that deeply explores the relationship of mother and daughter. Cabrera deftly uses language to explain the connection between these two: “I want to be everywhere Mama is.” She also uses lovely comparisons by the little girl who looks at their boots, hair, laugh and other elements of their day and sees how similar and different they are. It’s a beautiful look at the small pieces of our days that create such deep connectivity.
Cabrera’s art is done in acrylics, illustrations that are filled with deep bright colors that glow on the page. They too reveal the connections between the characters, deepening them even further than the words can.
A marvelous mother and daughter book. Appropriate for ages 4-6.
