Undead dinosaurs, vengeful ghosts & harmful healers.
Indigenous folklore in a modern paranormal/urban fantasy setting. Remember your roots and protect your loved ones.
Elatsoe is great- this was also giving Supernatural.

I very much enjoyed reading about Ellie, her friends, and her family.

Elatsoe is the descendant of a long line of Lipan Apache natives who can call and raise ghost animals. But in her world, this is normal, as America has been shaped by the magic of those indigenous and those not. When her cousin is murdered her whole family knows something is off especially when the town it happened in wants nothing more than her family to accept it as an accident.

Elatsoe is a fun MC. She has a ghost dog companion and regularly calls other ghosts. She has a friend Jay and they have a purely platonic relationship. And lastly, she's asexual. I loved the fact that everyone in her family rallied around behind her and her belief that her cousin was murdered and helped her figure out what was going on. I scanned this and enjoyed the story it represented. Also, I enjoyed learning about Lipan Apache traditions and beliefs since I can't think of other authors identifying as such. The casual representation of asexuality was a nice touch, even though it is only mentioned in passing. I also enjoyed that we got stories about Elatsoe's grandmother sixgreat who she's named after and got to see different uses of the power Elatsoe has. I am going to pick up the prequel book and anything else she writes.

Ghost dog, YA with Lipan Apache and asexual representation, a whole family investigating a murder, and a magical speculative America. 4/5

Started off slow, but definitely one of the wildest endings! I really struggled to get into this book (partially due to only listening to it via audiobook). The premise was fantastic; however, the writing style seemed pretty primitive and disjointed. I did not find Elie to be a likeable character. She seemed whiny and over entitled.

I’m mostly impressed with this novel, but see a few opportunities. I found the world to be absolutely incredibly creative. Urban fantasy-esque, where the world is mostly normal, but not quite. When teenagers seem to do teenagery things and then summon dead dogs and scale bridges with vampires because that’s “normal” in this place. I loved that this world just -was. The author didn’t set it up, or coddle the reader with exposition. It is an incredibly unique setting and writing style. It was also a fun whodunnit, with the main character feeling a bit like Nancy Drew with supernatural abilities. And skillfully woven throughout were rich stories of Native American lore, that made the book better by enriching the characters and propelling the arc or growth. My only hesitation is that the writing was choppy quick, language super simple, and served as a reminder that this was, indeed, Young Adult fantasy.

The writing here and there struck me as a little odd, but overall I really enjoyed it! A nice heartfelt story with a loving family, a boy and girl pairing who DON'T end up together, and a fantastic little dog. This teaches the importance of community, tradition/ancestry, and being brave. It also shows just how important the Indigenous people are for the communities and lands around us (and a bit of how discriminated against they were and still are)

but also, HOW could you make me think the dog wasn't gonna come back!!
