This book gets a lot of hate in the reviews and I think that people just had too high expectations for it. Not every book needs to be a literary masterpiece. It’s a fast, easy read. Good summer book. I’m always a little skeptical of series. While some are very good (Outlander, Hunger Games), they have a tendency to get cheesy and/or disorganized. This is a little bit both. But, it was entertaining, I read it in a week. I might read Book 2.

I started this book with apprehension, having read mixed reviews about it. After the first 250 pages I could understand why people got bored with it: nothing happened! But as I persisted further and further into the pages I began to get more and more excited as I turned each page! WOW! The more I read, the more I just could not stop! The romance between Diana and Matthew has been compared to Edward and Bella (Twilight) but I could not disagree more. Twilight is a children's story compared to the love and emotions this book sparks. People have complained about the length of this book, because everything is explained in so much detail but I think that makes the story work all the better, you feel like you are there with them! Deborah Harkness has created a masterpiece with this novel and I am eagerly awaiting Shadow Of Night to arrive in the mail. Lets just pray that she hurries up and completes the 3rd book!

Harkness created a lush magical version of our world with witches, vampires, and daemons. Sometimes the magic felt a little convenient with when Diana's new powers would appear. I loved the academic setting and was sad to leave it behind. The romance was somewhat rushed with lots of focus on physicality. The plot felt slow at times but I really enjoyed the read overall.

I read this as a book club book this year. I was sucked into it.
It's not perfect. It seemed to slow down and drag around halfway through. I think it could have been shortened and streamlined by about a third. I didn't realize it while I was reading, but thinking about it now, I was mostly waiting for it to end so we could get to the next part of the plot. I started to get tired of Matthew and his stupid vampire BS.
I loved supernatural yoga. I want that.
I'm going to read the next book in the trilogy at some point, but the more time that passes, the less excited I am about it.

DID NOT FINISH: 27%

I was on the fence about this book but was still enjoying it. It is rather pretentious and also thinks it’s more clever than it actually is. It’s also very classist and SO slow - I stopped when she bit her lip in concentration and a drop of blood appeared. Wtf is she talking about that is not how that works. I then also realized I really didn’t care about the magical manuscript and there’s prejudice creatures.
