Dark as hell, but so beautiful that you can't rip your eyes from the page.
Definitely a collection that I will be returning to time and time again.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
This may be me at my best.
Divinely good descriptions, unique and engaging pacing, as well as lessons embedded on every heartfelt page. This book is one to flip through at midnight while exploring the deepest and darkest corners of your mind. Readers will end this book with a feeling unlike anything else.
Truly one of my favorite poetry books, I recommend strongly to any fans of detailed writing, poetry, and deep-thinking!

The diction & language in this collection was so precise, so visceral. I feel like I could read this dozens of times & still not fully understand everything, but the vague nature adds to this sense of dread & heaviness that permeates these poems. So glad that I finally picked up a copy of this.
Akbar’s poetry navigates the complicated subjects of religion, addiction, and loss—of the body’s health, of self, of faith. These poems are seekers in themselves, journeying through alcoholism and recovery, faith and faithlessness. Akbar writes with frank and necessary transparency about the nature of addiction, the strange and painful want for the shackle the speaker is simultaneously working so hard to unclasp.
I bought this book for the line
here I am dying at an average pace
And the entire book is full of these beautiful, haunting metaphors and realizations.

"it's a myth
that love lives in the heart it lives in the throat we push it out
when we speak when we gasp we take a little for ourselves"
