The poem "I won't lie this plague of gratitude" broke me in all the right ways. It personified what it means to be cautiously optimistic and to experience foreboding joy because you have been living waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I will definitely have to re-read this one. It was raw, and I may not be smart enough for it. But I really enjoyed it!

I'm becoming more a vessel of memories than a person
it's a myth
that love lives in the heart
it lives in the throat we push it out
when we speak
when we gasp we take a little for ourselves

Extremely profound and amazing, heartfelt and raw collection of poetry.

Some of my favourite poems were; Heritage, Yeki blood Yeki Nabood, Calling a Wolf a Wolf, Stop me if you heard this one before, Portrait of the alcoholic with doubt and kingfisher, Desunt Monnulla, Portrait of the alcoholic three weeks sober, An apology...

Okay i was going to list all of my favourite poems but at this point this is getting absurd. I just really love this book, ok? Its amazing.

Performed pain is still pain

These are poems of raw and rich verse, brimming with imagination, pain, and wonder. Akbar's formal inventiveness and playful, expansive language cultivate a reading experience of delight and surprise; yet this collection compels one to burden oneself with the tangled weight of metaphor Akbar relies on to obliquely construct poetic spaces deeply marked by the desperate struggle between despair and hope. All in all, a really powerful and promising debut.

I’m so glad I read this collection together with a group. These were some hard poems both in the content (mental health, addiction, recovery) and in how challenging some of the writing was to understand. His use of imagery is so inventive and I loved that. And even if I couldn’t quite understand some of his poems, I felt them. I really appreciated the arc of this collection, starting from addiction to recovery and finishing with sobriety.
