The world building is decent--except for Sophos, which feels a bit out of place--and the character work improves with each addition to the series.
However the romance is a little rushed. It feels to me like the sexual tension, which has been building and building, should have been the first thing addressed, but instead the FMC and MMC feel like an instant couple?
I also found myself disappointed in how the whole Auralie situation played out. She is inarguably a villain, albeit a redeemable one, and I felt that not enough time went into confronting her with her wrongdoings. Everything else in the plot is paced pretty well, so this felt jarringly out of place.
Finally, I had to deduct a couple poijts for Diem being a centrist LOL. Her motivation is fickle and wishy washy. She hopes for peace, yet is willing to show mercy (multiple times!) to people who have killed entire villages of innocents, children, and people Diem loves. It feels naive and downright stupid for her to not have learned a lesson by now, which makes me squint at the author a little. While I understand whole heartedly that a characters motivations is not necessarily the viewpoint of the author, pushing for a centrist MC and overall theme feels cringe considering the political horror that is going on in America RN.
All in all though, Penn Cole does an excellent job at creating intgue and crafting problems that leave the reader wondering just how Diem and gang are going to get out of this one.
Eagerly awaiting the fourth and final installment.

Heat of the Everflame (Kindred's Curse Book 3)
Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“I am Diem Bellator.... And I kneel for no one.”
“This woman was a survivor. She could fight. She could endure. And she could win this war.”
------------------------------------------------
Wow! I continue to be amazed by this series! There is honestly not much I can say about this book because it is third in the series, and I do not want to give anything away. But... HOLY CANOLY was it good!
I can say that we go on quite the adventure during the plot of this book. It covers sooo much, and there continues to be such great plot development and character growth in this third installment.
I do feel like Diem really is starting to come into her own and accept who she is and the mission she has been thrust into. Luther, Luther, Luther... "Could there beee anyone better" (said in Chandler Bing's voice)? No... I think not. He is quite literally my favorite character in these books!
Uh 🙄 Henri continues to be Henri. And... the cadre continues to be the cadre. Taran is definitely my favorite of them all!
And, oh boy, that ending... I cannot wait to read book 4 when it is released.
If you have not read this series, do yourself a favor and READ IT!
P.S. I devoured this 1026 pg book in 3 days! I literally could not put it down.

I’ll admit that I didn’t quite love the first book because it was pretty anti-climactic. The second book was better. This one was even more so. I read this in three days. The slow burn romance in this is perfect. The spice is OK. The FMC annoyed me at times with her misplaced compassion for evil people. Still enjoyed it thoroughly though. Would definitely recommend this to a friend. I was close to not reading a second and third book of the series, but I’m glad I stuck with it.

For such a long book, it was full of action and adventure. Luke the other two, there were definitely a few inconsistencies and “this is obvious, why don’t they get it?” moments, but the story and characters are so great that it really didn’t bother me. I adore the FMC and really appreciate that her personality and morals have not been drowned out by the romance plot. Overall, long but great with a unique and interesting plot :).
