The first half of this book drags for awhile. I do appreciate the character building, building up and gathering the crew was exciting, but the first few chapters felt removed from the main plot in some regards, and the actual first chapter could have been completely cut and I don't think it would change the plot at all.

I absolutely adored the crew. Yes, even emo boy Kaz Brekker. 

One thing I cannot excuse are the ages. I had to age up all of these characters while reading because I'm sorry, but these people are not teenagers. It's not believable in any context. I have never been the greatest fan of Leigh Bardugo's prose or melodrama, but in a heist novel with wildly different characters and the banter (which I loved), I think it fits quite well. I do wish for a world that feels well built and rich, that the writing/prose would have reflected that with more immersive descriptions of the locations. I admit sometimes, I was a little lost on what was happening or where we were because of the lack of description of locations. Then other times, she did a great job setting a scene. It felt inconsistent.

Again, the biggest issue with this book is the pacing. It's slow to start, so slow that it takes 100 pages to really get into the plot. After that however, it's quite good. Great characters, especially when they are together. I laughed, and even teared up there near the end. I felt pretty meh about the original Shadow and Bone trilogy, but this one is much more my taste. I can't wait to pick up Crooked Kingdom.

This is a young adult book, however it does have a handful of scenes with graphic violence and injuries. It does detail the blood and injuries in at least two of these scenes. There are several mentions of sex-trafficking as well, though thankfully there are no sexually violent scenes.

Fantastic. Bardugo had me on the edge of my seat throughout and I love how full of life all her characters are. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read her work but I can’t wait to read more.

I literally just write 2 paragraphs worth of a review and accidentally deleted all of it….:(. Excuse me if this feels less exclusive. Anyway onto the review.
First of all, it took me 3 separate tries and 2 years to get into the book, before I finished it fully, and I am so glad that I did! Following along the journey of these 6 great characters made me so happy, sad, proud, mad, betrayed, empowered, lost, found, amazed, horrified, appalled, terrified, resentful and hopeful. I really liked the way the characters were written with each unique set of skills, quirks, and setbacks. I loved experiencing each characters story(poor Kaz, that was rough) and following their quest(or should I say heist :) ). 
The plot was intriguing and sometimes predictable and sometimes breath-takingly surprising. It was the perfect mix of both. I really loved the mission our characters were on and it kept me interested all the way through. I also loved the representation this book offered(people with disabilities, trauma, mental health problems, gambling addiction, more trauma, abuse, POC, PTSD, and maybe LGBTQ kinda, maybe?). It was a beautiful story and will definitely read the next book in the series.

I want to start out by saying that I don't usually read fantasy but I actually liked this one??
This book grabbed me until the end, the plot was pretty interesting, the characters were relatable (even though sometimes they didn't sound like they were in their teens), also I love love love the found family trope.
Obviously I liked some characters more than others, but all have of the crew holds a special place in my heart. Can you tell that I got emotional attached to them? 😌
