I really, really enjoyed this.
1) How many fantasy books are ever set in Fake Holland instead of Fake Italy or Fake England? Very creative. Plus the other half of the book seems to be somewhere along the Fake Finland-Russia border. Bravo, Leigh Bardugo.
2) REPRESENTATION! Why are YA authors so much better at this in general? The motley crew was super diverse without feeling forced. I will say that when you have six main characters and each one has a Dark Secret! some are going to feel stronger than others. I think that's OK. There were enough strong characters to outweigh the middling ones.
3) (Pretty) good plot that moves quickly. My one gripe is that the climactic escape scenes felt very rushed - like, how did this guy get here? How did this person get from all the way over there to here? And so forth. It seemed like the author didn't have a clear picture in her head of what the scenery was supposed to look like, and it was all very hard to follow, but at that point, who cares? It's fun.

4,5 estrellas.
