While this book brings up an issue that desperately needs attention, I found the redundancy a bit distracting. the chapters were repetitive after awhile and I would have loved to see more ways to take action and less repetition. the documentary was fantastic.

RS book group May 2011. Very hard to get through. I read some of the reviews here and how people read this book all in one night- I just could not do that. I needed to digest it slowly. Not a happy book, but necessary to grab you out of a cushy life and get you to do something. I'm grateful to Courtney for creating www.talentsofsisters.org so I can knit and donate items to raise money for some of these concerns. Thanks Courtney!

A compelling and moving book! If only more people realized that we as women are a powerful force! If we can empower other women and in turn communities and countries these honour killings, bindings, genital cutting and killing or aborting of female babies.

This was a terrible choice of book to bring on a holiday but a great choice for staying awake on the plane. My American ignorance dramatically limited what I knew about feminism. This book captures a story of the world by sharing the lived experience of individuals. It is one of those rare books examining a social concern and providing actionable steps to make change.

This is a heavy book. Not that it is especially long, but it is such topics that make it feel like your issues are so small. Rape, violence against women, lack of freedom and opportunities- we've all heard these topics in broad tones and in the occasional political speech. We haven't heard individual stories. We haven't heard about the 13 year olds being gang raped as a punishment. It's painful, dark and hard to hear (or read). But - it is critical to know these issues, and to fight against them. I truly appreciated that the authors gave steps of things to do, and that they spoke about how opposing political sides can (and should) come together. It's not a book for everyone, because some really don't want to hear these details. But - I hope more do choose to read this and get involved.
