As usual, David Sedaris had me laughing out loud. The audiobook is read by the author, making it even better!
Finally, the guy we fell in love with is back! At once witty and poignant, these stories brought me to tears of laughter. There was a time when Sedaris had gotten a bit too schmaltzy or just plain weird. This book is vintage Sedaris, letting us in on his family members with all their quirks. It also seems to be his best means of talking about his sister, Tiffany, who killed herself. It's a catharsis, but also an exorcism.
I listened to the audiobook, read by David Sedaris, and absolutely LOVED it! His books are always laugh-out-loud funny, but it’s a whole different experience listening to Sedaris actually telling the stories. Highly recommend!!
This is my first Sedaris and I’ve already got two more on my pile. I loved it! Made me cry with laughter but also very moving and heartfelt. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a short chapter book you can dip in and out of.
There is a tenderness to this one that got me. The essay about his mother particularly broke my heart.

Idk. This isn't my humor. I laughed twice in 7 chapters/stories. I assume these stories are nonfiction, as I believe that is Sedaris' form (this is my first encounter with him, obviously). But, they read like fiction, that's how I laughed was by thinking that way. Otherwise, I don't feel comfortable laughing at "fond" memories of the suicide of a sister, fading father, gay slurs, bad parenting, dysfunctional views of self. I see what Sedaris is doing, I do. This just isn't for me.

Sedaris has matured and thus so has his material. It was a welcome change. This book was an honest examination of some of life's great challenges including political disagreement within families, aging, death and suicide, alcoholism. I both cried and laughed throughout this book. It's definitely one of his best.
