Like catching up with your best friend after time apart. Sedaris is such a great story teller and the book is laugh out loud funny.
emotional funny

Lots of laughs and nearly a few tears. Sedaris doesn't mince words and isn't afraid to be open about emotionally painful topics... and excruciatingly embarrassing topics either. I need to read his backlist now!

I never know what to think about Sedaris. At best, he is a clever essayist and humorist that points out the absurdity of day-to-day life with moments of true inspiration. At worst, he is an obnoxious, self-deprecating, crass, crude writer who has gotten rich by whining. I tend to drift back and forth between the two opinions, but I keep coming back to his work.

This collection, Calypso, revolves around a few themes: aging, family, and the Sedaris beach house in NC. Sedaris has many more serious moments in this collection. His sister recently committed suicide and he contemplates his own mortality. There are moments of laugh-out-loud humor.

3/5

Perhaps his most personal work yet. Calypso is dark, funny, reflective, and outrageous—classic Sedaris. My only qualm is that in this one, more than in his other works, I could see the scaffolding of what he was doing. His methods became obvious to me and even predictable at points. It’s not ideal when you can see the writer writing. Still, David Sedaris remains a favorite, and this book, as with his others, had me laughing HARD, cringing with recognition, and aching at his reflections on what it is to get older, to navigate the sticky territory of love and family, and to realize how mortal and frivolous and stubborn we can be. Sedaris is a wonder.
