Getting to see the sibling dynamics between the endless in this volume was sweet and sad in many ways. I’m hoping the following volumes will allow for exploration of more of the siblings.

Brilliant as always. The was my least favourite when I read them initially but this time I enjoyed Destruction‘s story line.

While I've become more accustomed to the art, it was in this volume that I found myself thinking fondly of Skottie Young, who has worked with Gaiman before and illustrated that delightful graphic adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.

2022 Reread:
In which we find out what happened to Destruction. Delirium gets it into her head that she must find her lost brother. Desire and Despair both refuse to help so she turns to Dream, who is currently sulking over the end of a relationship. Their search takes them unsuccessfully through the mortal world, and then to the shrine of Dream and Calliope’s son.

Delirium is hard to read, because of her meandering thoughts untethered to reality. The visual representation and contrast between her and Dream, though, is lovely, and their relationship is oddly echoing David and Alexis. Particularly the moment when Dream is suffering and Delirium forces herself to be lucid in order to protect him.

An engaging single story arc that still draws in threads of other storylines.

While the most linear of the Sandman volumes, it does not say much that is new. Change is hard. Life is too short. These are cliches, not profound themes, so basing the entire volume on them is not interesting because it's not revelatory. Gaiman also wants us to feel for the Endless but how are we supposed to when their power seems limitless and their emotional live unrelatable?
