It’s an absolute shame that the marketing and packaging of this book don’t do more to indicate how absolutely queer this book is. I had to hear word of mouth that it’s good tropey wlw summer fun, and once I finally sat down with this book, I absolutely devoured it. (The audiobook clocks in just under eight hours, and I knocked it out in a 24 hour period, if that tells you anything.)

This book isn’t perfect, and I think your mileage will vary especially for non-queer readers, but for me? The idiot who has been serially in love with her best friends too many times to count? Hot Dog Girl hits all the right spots.

I want to start this review by saying that if I was a teenager, I would’ve rated this higher. It is a cute story and kept me engaged enough that I wanted to finish it. However, Eloise drives me nuts. She is so self-centered and only focused on what she wants. She really doesn’t care about how other people feel or the repercussions of what she asks others to do.

The cover and title of this book are absolutely delightful! However, my expectations were for more amusement park/hot dog suit shenanigans which were surprisingly not as integral as anticipated. Lou is an impulsive teen who pulls the whole pretend-we're-dating-so-I-can-interest-my-true-crush scenario. While Lou is a complex character, I found the other characters somewhat one-dimensional. The end felt more neat and clean than what a real life representation would look like. Nonetheless, the writing and characters were entertaining.

I thought Elouise was kinda annoying. Like the scheme to literally fake date ur bff just to date another dude already in a relationship was super weird, her refusal to accept that the park was closing was immature, especially when she thought she was sooo entitled to know literally everything that happened, and the fact that her dad literally does so much for her and she still attacked him saying he's the reason her mother left, like what?? I kept forgetting that she was a junior in HS bc the way she was written was giving 12-year-old girl who stomps her feet anytime she doesn't get what she wants. I also could not have guessed who was going to end up with who until about the last 30 pages.

The whole cheating part was weird too bc Jenna (not sure that's her name but whatever) literally didn't care that she got caught cheating, she only cared that her mother was going to find out and that she would be grounded 4eva bc shes no longer dating a popular/rich kid. There wasn't any remorse for doing an action that hurt someone, but then all we get is her constantly saying her mother was going to do something, over and over but it didn't even matter bc she was dating the dude she cheated on her bf with by the end of the book. I'm really not a fan of cheating if it can be avoided, and in this case, it did nothing except piss me off.

3.5/5 Stars

Zoomed though this book. I enjoyed it in the moment, but overall it was fairly average.
