I came back to write a review, looking back after just having finished the second book. 

God I miss Ned! Such a great character, his relationship with his children is so beutiful. (Especially touching for readers who lacked the presens of a father growing up). Ned’s demise makes a huge gap in the rest of the story, still he’s always there.

 

I dont know if it might just be the pleasure of novelty, but the first book is my favorite, though long and detailed. 

The biggest ick is that the book contain quite alot of casual (and not so casual) misogyny, so bare that in mind. There’s the usual trope of the idea that women cannot be strong and fierce, without terrible things first being done to them (by men). After all, this is a man’s work. Still, there are also a great deal of love for the female characters and some beautifully written passages. 

I love the psychological development of Sansa, the wit of Arya, the love for family of Cat, and the evil scheming/survival mechanisms of Cersei.

Truly, this is a beast of a book. I love the character development of Daenerys, Robb, and Jon especially. While the book didn't make me immediately love the characters, I found that I really grew attached to them throughout the process of reading, really caring for some and truly hating others. Overall, it's a truly amazing piece of fiction. I look forward to buying and reading the rest of the currently available series. Definitely for more mature readers, and I think if you like Brandon Sanderson, these books are right up your alley (and vis versa), though be prepared for much darker themes and descriptions.

I watched the TV series before reading the book and I think it made it easier to keep the characters straight. Otherwise I think all the names and people could be overwhelming to keep track of while understanding the world.
