An amazing story was written poorly. The thing about this novel was that I really enjoyed the whole story but the buildup is very weird. Initially, a lot of bogus information is provided about the whole story which I felt wasn't required. Also, most of the time author would make a character the center of the story, and suddenly on the next page that character would completely disappear from the story and now the focus will be on a completely new character.
I felt that this could have been written in a much clinical manner but still a good read especially if you have watched the movie of the same name then you'll realize that movie shows a complete story(technically the movie is not based on this novel but another novel).
The book becomes very interesting towards the end but that was most probably because of the actual story and not because of the way of writing.
I would highly recommend this book if you are driven by the curiosity of knowing the history if you are looking for something written in a good manner then don't go for this.

While I don't mind some extraneous information in the books I read/listen to, that seemed to be almost all this book was. The author never met a rabbit tail he didn't follow. Listening to it, the book was nine hours plus long, only about twenty minutes of those involving the title event. By the end, I just wanted it to be done.

This is a DNF.
I was pretty excited for this one, but the writing is just not hitting for me. It is meticulously researched, but I just am not interested in the technicalities of the different types of planes or bases that were involved in the U.S. spy work. I made it 140 pages before realizing that if I was only going to skim, I might as well stop.

Very informative and interesting. It suffers slightly from being strangely organized and from some of the odd choices regarding what events received significant explanations. All in all, this is an interesting book that I would recommend to others with an interest in the cold war.
An absolutely brilliant book, filled with understanding, passion and opinion. A very interesting read and worth getting for any Cold War enthusiasts!
What an amazing story! Now time to watch the movie to see if Tom Hanks did it justice.
Interesting book about a very interesting point in history. I have to say that it’s not the kind of book to swipe you off your feet from the start. Definitely took me some determination to continue reading it at first (maybe because it’s quite biographical at the beginning and having seen the movie I kept on expecting the “action” to start). Although the writing style was not necessarily my favourite it was an enjoyable read and personally I felt that the second half was much better/easier to read. My review is probably influenced by the fact I saw the movie before reading the story so the storyline itself wasn’t surprising to me.
