A normal morning for a normal couple, having their coffee and looking forward to the next hours of their day. Someone calls at the front door and it takes just a second for everything Erin thought she knew to be turned upside down.
Her husband jumps out of their fourth-floor apartment when his partner in the police department comes in to arrest Dany for a crime that remains unsolved for a good part of the book.
If that got your attention like me, you must read this book. I simply couldn’t stop reading. And just when I thought I had it all predicted and gotten all caught up with what really happened in the past and moreso why, there’s another shocking twist that comes around to destroy everything I thought I knew.
Told in now and then parts, it’s a fast-paced novel with interesting characters and if you enjoy a suspense story with many twists and turns, this book is a brilliant choice.

Jo Spain books are the kind that you want to settle down with a cuppa and devour in one sitting. I really wish I could have done this with The Perfect Lie, but all the same it was a fantastic and I couldn't getr enough. Her books are always so twisty and shocking and this one was no different. With a story told through the past and present and from multiple points of view that all come together in the end, this is a book that will leave you wanting more.
Erin Kennedy thought she was living the perfect life. After a family tragedy she moved to New York from Ireland and married police officer Danny. They were happy and things were great. Until the day that he throws himself over their 4th story balcony to his death. So why, 18 months later, is she in court for the murder of her husband?
Erin realises that she didn't really know Danny at all. What she learns about him after his death makes her question everything. The police are not talking and she feels like she is losing her mind. She has no other family in the US and very few friends. She doesn't believe him to capable of what he is being accused and sets out to find the truth.
Jo Spain is a go to author for me and I can't recommend her books more. Easily a 5 star read for me, with an ending that you will not see coming.

I've just read this today and it's not out until May but it's another corker from Jo Spain so I wanted to make a note of that. THAT and the fact that the opening chapter is one of the most shocking and OMG what just happened chapters that I have ever read.
Twisty and back stabbing is not the word for the world in which these characters live. It's very twisty and the two time lines work very well. Erin is a brilliant character - her confusion and 'in the dark' moments make this a wild reading experience. I didn't know where this was going at all or where this was going to end. It was even more twistier by the end than I had imagined.
Set in and around Long Island, there are some great places where the characters live, meet up and hide....the playground of the rich and famous....it's a view, a roam around the island that will show you the shadows and darkness where these people live, what wealth and privilege really mean and what being an outsider of any kind really means.

Just wow!
Not just The Perfect Lie but the perfect story.
Jo reels us in with her writing style, the layers of the tale building slowly, carefully.
There is no way that I could have guessed where this book would lead.
The start intriguing, the middle a real puzzle and that ending, absolutely explosive.
The Perfect Lie is a novel that has your attention from the very beginning and you will not want to look away until you finish.
Emotional and thrilling, this a book that really gets your heart pumping.

The description of the book says : "He jumped to his death in front of witnesses. Now his wife is charged with murder" Good grief. I read half of this book and got nowhere closer to finding anything that made sense. I like Jo Spain's books set in Ireland but this one set on Long Island, NY was a mess. Should I blame it on her trying to write a story set in NYC; Cambridge, MA; and Long Island? There is a lack of atmosphere that may be due to her writing out of her sphere of experience. But what is the reason for such a meandering, going nowhere mess. I finally gave up as I couldn't push myself further just to find out how she manages to make sense of this ridiculous plot.
This thriller has a great opening chapter and equally satisfying last line, but the middle dragged quite a bit. Also, the premise is not as unique as I thought and left me feeling deliberately misled (which I'll explain at the end below).
I found the story and whodunit quite predictable (there were quite a few hints, plus a lot of been there done that in other books), so nothing really shocked or surprised me. One chapter (Las Vegas) in particular came across as wacky and out of place.
Nevertheless, it was a fun read and some of the characters (especially the female lawyer) were pretty awesome.
This drastically affected my expectations, reading experience and overall rating. This could have been a jaw-dropping and clever story, but all I felt after finishing it was that I had been deliberately misled with a non-factual and inaccurate blurb/synopsis/premise.
I was a huge fan of Dirty Little Secrets so this was quite the disappointment.
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this book.

Spoiler
The copy I read had the uncorrected cover blurb and synopsis i.e. ‘charged with HIS murder’. It’s just one word but makes all the difference as compared to the updated cover pictured here. This drastically affected my expectations, reading experience and overall rating.
