Erin wakes up one morning content with her life. She loves her husband and the life they have created in Long Island. Her marriage to Danny, a cop, started with a whirlwind romance but he is the perfect man for Erin. Then there's a knock at the door and Danny's partner is here to arrest him. Danny jumps to his death with his wife and colleages watching. One year later, Erin is on trial for her husband's murder and has learnt that Danny was not as perfect as he seems.
I am a bit conflicted in my thoughts about this book. I whizzed through the pages quickly and was immediately engaged in the plot - how on earth could Erin be on trial when everyone saw Danny commit suicide?
There's three time periods -two set in the past and one in the present .It was intriguing and satisfying to see how both timelines in the past were related and set events in motion. However, I really struggled with the chapters from the present time period. This was to the extent that at 75% of the way through I was still desperate for answers - not in excited anticipation of the ending but because I was so confused and irritated. I came up with several wild and wonderful theories because I don't feel enough hints or clues were hidden in the plot for the reader. Added to that the Erin was quite irritating as a character and my favourite characters were those in the background like Bud and Karla.
Having said that, I really enjoyed the last 25% of the book when all becomes clear and there are a series of clever and thought provoking twists, malice and tension.
I am glad I read the book but it's not one I'd urge people to prioritise it in their TBR piles.
Thank you to the author, Netgalley and Quercus for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

„The Perfect Lie“ is a compelling, surprising and pacy page turner, which will leave you guessing until the bitter end. It’s a mix between a domestic thriller and a courtroom drama, therefore you‘ll stay glued to the pages and want to read it in one nerve stretching sitting. The writing was superb, I loved the plot and the characters. This was my first book by Jo Spain and it will definitely not be my last.
Thank you NetGalley / Quercus Books for providing me with this riveting arc in exchange of an honest review.

This was the most average read it could’ve been, the characters felt so one dimensional & while I didn’t see the plot twist coming, I also didn’t care
Also I only read this book because I found it abandoned in a Portuguese airport so I decided to bring it with me but now I see why it’s previous owner decided to leave it behind

tw: murder, sexual assault.
This is a gripping read that had me on the edge of my seat, eager to know what happens next. A real page turner.
The premise of this one is what intrigued me. I kept trying to guess what would happen next and while sometimes I was close, I could never fully predict what would happen next.
I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving anything away but I will say that this book is mind boggling. The moment the subplot and plot collided, my brain very nearly imploded. A stroke of genius.
However, the ending seemed slightly lacklustre to me. I think that’s the issue with reading as much as I do, every possibility had run through my head at least once and I saw remnants of other books I had read, in this one. This is ultimately why I didn’t give it 5 stars. Not a bad ending by any means, but my overactive imagination sort of spoiled the surprise

It says something that I haven't stopped while reading this book to make any notes (although to be fair, I normally only do that if something annoys me). I haven't finished the book yet, but at about 50% through when they started referring to the husband whom Erin was accused of murdering, I already was like "yeah they're not talking about Danny". Then about 5% later, I went "oh I bet they mean Cal. Something must happen there". So I've been reading with that thought in mind, which is kinds of annoying because I feel like I've ruined the twist for myself. Oh well, I don't know how it all happens yet, that can be the big reveal for me. And who knows, maybe I'm wrong, and Danny is actually alive, and I'm completely wrong about Cal. We'll see.

If ever a book could win an award for one of the best openings ever, this would be it. What a way to start a story! The author made sure she had my attention and she kept it throughout.
The story flicks around with chapters before and after Danny kills himself. Most chapters are from Erin’s point of view but there are some to do with another thread in the story of which I won’t go into any detail to do with that one as wasn’t sure how it all fitted in but when it becomes clear, well you are in for another roller coaster of a ride.
This is a story that will have you question how well you really know your partner. In Erin’s case, not that well at all as she starts to discover things about him after his death. She is in turmoil with the man she thought he was and the man she is just finding out about. There are so many secrets and lies and as with a spider’s web, the author enticed me into it and once she had me, there was no going anywhere.
The Perfect Lie, for me, is the author’s best book yet. From the brilliant opening then to chapters packed full of mystery and suspense. There are so many twists and turns of which literally took my breath away. You just never knew what to expect and I couldn’t relax as I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see what Erin was going to discover next. Great book and an absolute must read for psychological thrillers.
My thanks to Quercus Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
