Man my head was spinning with this one! So much deception and mistrust with this book. My jaw dropped about 5 times and had to stop to reread a few sentences.

Good suspense

This one is a very well-written crime book that keeps you guessing until the end. I was really intrigued by the premise (a woman sees her husband jumping out of the balcony and yet she’s accused of having murdered him) and the novel didn’t disappoint. It’s a real page-turner that kept me hooked and, although it can seem a bit confusing at times, everything makes sense in the end and it’s all worth it.
I can’t tell much about the plot, otherwise I would spoil the numerous plot twists, but I can say that Jo Spain is a writer (and a Dubliner!) we are proud of, and I definitely recommend this book. It will be out on May 13, so save the date!

3.5⭐️

Chilling an calculated in so many ways. This well-written book makes you wonder if you really ever know someone. Sometimes everything just goes wrong, and once you cave in or do a mistake just once, it might take you down, or haunt you for the rest of your life.

It is hard to write a review about a book like this, because you want to talk about it, you want to share your thoughts, but it seems impossible without giving away too much of the plot. This book kept me hooked from the first page, and I really wanted to find out the truth. There are so many twists and turns in the book, at the same time only parts of the truth are reveled, which can really mess up a reader's mind.

Now that I think about the characters I really feel for most of them, and at the same time I feel really sorry for them, but I also understand some of the things they did, while at other times I question what they did. I guess that's humans for you. I hope my review is as cryptic as I intent it to be, because I feel like it reflects the book very well.

Timeline jumps around somewhat.

If you're not paying attention closely (audiobook), it can be a little hard to ascertain which timeline you're listening to at times

This thriller has a great opening chapter and equally satisfying last line, but the middle dragged quite a bit. Also, the premise is not as unique as I thought and left me feeling deliberately misled (which I'll explain at the end below).

I found the story and whodunit quite predictable (there were quite a few hints, plus a lot of been there done that in other books), so nothing really shocked or surprised me. One chapter (Las Vegas) in particular came across as wacky and out of place.

Nevertheless, it was a fun read and some of the characters (especially the female lawyer) were pretty awesome.

SpoilerThe copy I read had the uncorrected cover blurb and synopsis i.e. ‘charged with HIS murder’. It’s just one word but makes all the difference as compared to the updated cover pictured here.

This drastically affected my expectations, reading experience and overall rating. This could have been a jaw-dropping and clever story, but all I felt after finishing it was that I had been deliberately misled with a non-factual and inaccurate blurb/synopsis/premise.

I was a huge fan of Dirty Little Secrets so this was quite the disappointment.

Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this book.

More like a 3.5. An enjoyable mystery with a good plot twist.
