I absolutely devoured this book. Jo Spain has been one of my favourite authors for awhile now but this book confirms this for me. The last 80 pages of the book had me left with my jaw hanging open. I’m usually good at picking up on plots and I thought I’d figured it out only to be completely wrong, and that was utterly amazing.
The effort that went into this book is amazing. No corner was cut. Every character felt so real to me that I felt I was involved in this story too. The blurb is deceiving in the best way possible. It makes you think one thing is happening while you never suspect what actually does happen.
This book shows the complexity of life and relationships. Whilst dealing with hard topics there were elements of humour and love that all around just made this the perfect book.

*My Thoughts*
I wish I liked this one more!
The plot is so captivating and I just wish the book had been the same.
For me, the book was a bit too long. Too much time where little happened.
I did find myself becoming really wrapped up in the story and then the alternating chapter would happen and I was lifted from the story.
Although, on a positive note, Jo Spain has a unique ability to craft excellent crime storylines.
I felt the settings in the book were well developed and described.
I also liked how the plot had multiple contributing factors to it.
While Spain may be a hit & miss author for me, this book has excellent reviews & I would still encourage anyone else to read it.
Three stars!
Thanks to NetGalley, Quercus Books & Jo Spain for an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Perfect Lie by Jo Spain
What a beginning and what a puzzler of a story! The book starts with a rushed, sexy morning for Erin Kennedy and her detective husband, Danny. After a knock on their door, Erin answers it to find Danny's co-workers, while Danny walks to their 4th story window and jumps to his death. We then hop between several timelines as we learn that Erin is being tried for the death of her husband. How can that be when we saw her husband jump?
The story hops between several past timelines and the present, which is at Erin's trial, eighteen months after Danny jumped to his death. Two of the timelines involve two college women who are wrestling with the aftermath of the rape of one of the women. Another timeline follows Erin, after Danny's death, as she hits brick walls trying to find out what was going on in Danny's life that would cause him to be under investigation at his job. The more Erin learns about Danny, the more she realizes she did not know her husband. He was keeping secrets from her, and his colleagues, rather than consoling her because of Danny's death, will have nothing to do with her.
But Erin has friends, some of them new friends, that come to her aid after Danny's death. With the alternating timelines things are very confusing although I did figure out a lot of what was going on before the halfway mark. Still, I enjoyed seeing how the story played out and I plan to investigate more of Jo Spain's work.

(3.5) Good book with a solid plot but I felt there were too many plot twists that were built up too much to not be explored a bit more when they were revealed, instead the book just rushed on to setting up the next twist.
That being said I read it in under a day so it's definitely still an enjoyable read.

The Perfect Lie
By Jo Spain
Dang Jo Spain, what a perfect book you’ve written about “the perfect lie”.
Just so you guys know when you think you’ve begun to figure out or guess this book you haven’t. Not. At. All …..
This book is told in 4 sections
- The perfect lie
- Harvard
- The truth
- The WHOLE TRUTH
With some chapters In between bouncing back and forth in the first person told by Erin.
Past and present. Erin is the main character who is married to Danny Ryan, a detective who in the first chapter jumps to his death when police officers show up at his door on a random morning. Erin is left standing in shock with little to no answers and it is up to her to find the truth. Kayla her attorney (who you’ll love helps her along the way ). This book was written perfectly. I loved the way Jo put these chapters together, the flow from beginning to end was phenomenal.

I loved this book, I couldn’t stop reading. I loved the 3 different chapter timelines, and how I was constantly questioning everything, but finding out the answers in the following chapter. It took me a while catch on that Cal was the rapist, as it was smartly protrayed, with just subtle hints
I loved Jo Spain’s Six Wicked Reasons, I loved Dirty Little Secrets even more, I went into The Perfect Lie with the highest expectations but they were all met and – dare I say it – exceeded. I don’t know whether to sing Jo Spain’s praises for being so clever or hit myself over the head for being so dim!
The first thing that came to mind after a few chapters of The Perfect Lie was WTF. Of course it was right there in the blurb, I could have known that police detective Danny would jump to his death, that his wife Erin would be charged with murder. I would have known all that had I read that blurb, but I was craving a proper thriller so I grabbed one off Mount TBR that was bound to satisfy my thriller needs, it was Jo Spain, that was all I needed to know. But there I was, two chapters in and faced with the conundrum: how is Erin charged with murder when it was clearly a suicide, which was witnessed by a few police officers to boot? I couldn’t wait to find out how Jo was going to make that one work!
The narrative takes the reader back and forth in time. We find out what happens after Danny’s death, up to and including Erin’s trial, while also learning about their earlier relationship. Thrown into the mix, rather incomprehensibly at first, is a storyline set at Harvard a few years earlier. The alternating storylines allow Jo and her characters to keep their secrets close to their chests, keeping the reader in the dark, guessing at every little thing.
As the story progressed I figured a few things out, but there was a whole bunch of things I didn’t see until I practically crashed into them. The less you know, the better, just read it!
I just have to pull out all the clichés for this one. I was intrigued from the get-go, it had me glued to its pages, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and kept on my toes as well. All of that at once. What a feat!
The Perfect Lie is a cracking thriller! Intriguing, tense and super addictive, it’s a corker any thriller lover needs to add to their collection right this instant! Need I say it? Highly recommended!
