I liked the first part. The African slant on things was very refreshing. I had high hopes for the second book but I was badly disappointed. It became a real effort to get through the last half of the book. The epilogue made me want to throw it at the wall.
This should have been one, much, much shorter volume as the second book effectively regurgitates the first. In the first book, plucky teens fight and fall in love with equally plucky princes and princesses. Then everyone gets magical powers. So far so good. In the second book, plucky teens fight, fall in love, break up, betray, reconcile while gaining god-like powers.
This is a bad case of grade inflation, as even gaining god-like powers isn’t enough to save them, apparently.
No third book for me
