Honestly? Underwhelming. This book spent so much time running back and forth. The characters always win, despite the odds. Random human willingly sacrifice themselves for the Lorien teens. By the time something *actually happened*, the book ended. It was a lot of slow build-up for little reward. When I was the intended age for the Lorien Legacies, I think I would have gobbled these up. As an adult, they're slow and unrealistic. A lot of YA is really good and accessible for many ages. This is nothing special.

I probably enjoyed this book about as much as I enjoyed the first one in this series. It’s still a bit predictable and not particularly original but one thing it definitely isn’t is boring. The pace of this book is very fast and I found myself being able to read large chunks quickly without constantly checking the page number. I was intrigued the whole way through and I feel that every moment was important to the plot in some way. I loved the new characters of number Six and Seven, they really expanded the world and learn about Loric people as we meet more of them.

One thing I did not love is that every Cêpan we meet is either already dead or dead soon after we meet them. I wish it wasn’t so obvious that it’s only happening to further the plot. It makes the story feel more written and less believable. I also wasn’t a fan of the font changes as we moved perspectives between John and Marina. There’s so many better ways to differentiate perspective and font changes were just messy and disorienting, reminded me of year 5 english homework.

Overall I think this was a good book. I had a great time reading it and although it’s not a new favorite I’m having a good time with this series so far. Every time I think I have a favorite character though they end up dead so there’s that. 4 stars.
