okay i went down a rabbit hole on booktok and ended up here….but tell me why i was so invested in this story. the title is fitting it’s definitely nsfw but it also has plot?? and character development?? the dialogue (esp in the spicy scenes) was a little bit cringy at times and the writing style was pretty simple and straightforward but i wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as i did….
Graphic: Sexual content
Minor: Homophobia
i only read this because i thought the title was funny, but i did enjoy the communication and the mc’s friends at his workplace. the mc and li were in their forties and the author kept describing them like they were 60-80 which was fucking hilarious, however this book was not intended to be a comedy so that’s not a positive aspect,
This book was really low-drama, a lot of fluff, and really mild BDSM. Not bad, but not what I was expecting.
challenging
emotional
funny
medium-paced
When I read the blurb Not Safe For Work by L.A. Witt on Netgalley I immediately wanted to read it. It has BDSM of the bondage variety, features two guys who’ve been around the block a few times and revolves around a taboo relationship. Could it be any more my type of book?
If you didn’t already guess from my mention of Netgalley I was sent Not Safe For Work by the publisher in return for an honest review. Always best to get the legal stuff out of the way first, wouldn’t you agree? Now down to the nitty gritty. I adored the start of Not Safe For Work, particularly the opening few chapters. In these early chapters Jon has just discovered that the super important client is not only a sub but also interested in him. I loved the sexual tension between Jon and Rick, which was heightened by the need for secrecy.
‘I can’t focus. Not at work. Not anywhere.’ I took a breath and reached up to rub a phantom crick out of my neck. ‘I can’t... I can’t think. If he’s there, he’s all I can think about. If he’s not there, I want him to be. I-’
It was probably about half-way through that Not Safe For Work started to lose its shine for me...

I was pulled right into this story, because the book's voice is really captivating. Both main characters are middle-aged. This alone is a huge plus to me because always reading about young, sexy men in their twenties? 'Older' people have a (sex) life, too. I liked how their age plays a role. You can't kneel for a long time without discomfort and sometimes your knees do complain. This made the characters very real and likeable.
There is some kind of Insta-lust, but in this case it does make sense. If you are kinky and you learn someone is compatible with you, you start to fantasize, right? I especially liked that they have a vanilla sex life and a kinky one. The kinks they engage in, are discussed before they start playing and they get to know each other, so trust is build before.
While there are some sex scenes (of course), the characters aren't defined by their sexuality. They have a life outside of it too - mainly work - and that has a big part in this story. Bonus points for female characters with personality.
There were some repititions in this book, but since my copy is an arc I'm hoping this will be edited. If the ending or rather the part before the end, would have been not so rushed and easily solved, I'd have given 5 stars.
I was provided via NetGalley with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.

Enjoyed this one. Loved the chemistry and the love scenes were intense and hot.
I really enjoy this author's MCs. I started reading her MF reads years ago where she writes as Lauren Gallagher and I was struck with the depth of emotion that her MCs exhibit as they fall in love with each other. I felt that with Rick and Jon. They made me melt. I also love that her MCs are regular people. Jon is 45, has worked as a architectural modeler for several years, has 2 ex-wives and 3 kids he is trying to put through college/grad school. His knees ache, he is overworked, loves to banter with his crew at work and by the way, he is bisexual and is a Dom. He finds Rick, a submissive, the unbelievably wealthy CEO of a company Jon's firm is doing business with, in the cleverest of ways. That scene at the beginning of the book just drew me in immediately. Rick is driven to be the best but you can see he NEEDS to submit to clear his head. But there were a few issues. There are times when the book is oddly repetitive. Yes, I am a Dom and I want to make sure my sub feels good and as a Dom , I should be in charge and make sure my sub is pleasured, and yes, Rick as a submissive should want to fly. And yes, I can't deal with top drop, oh this top drop is dragging me down, oh Rick is out of my league and he is just so hot, he can't really be into me. Just a fair amount of telling instead of showing, which I was very surprised at. Additionally, this author does her research sometimes, in my opinion, to her detriment. I noticed that in an MF book by this author about breaking horses - we learned about the saddles used, the knots to hold the saddles, etc. In this book, we learn QUITE a bit about modeling and the materials used and what happens when the cement reacts with the glue or whatever. Perhaps some of that could have been eliminated. Now the BDSM scenes I liked. Some GR readers said that there wasn't enough BDSM content. This was just right for me. I hate when the BDSM overwhelms the story and affects my enjoyment of the romance. But this was integrated well. There was a touch of the clinical description of the play equipment that I sometimes saw in Candace Blevins "Safeword" series. E.g., the arm goes up and you loop the rope around and tie it and the dial is turned. Just sort of too descriptive. BUT, at the end of the day, I got a very sexy, emotional and unique tale about two guys who initially just want to explore their mutual compatible kinks but then fall for each other against a backdrop of an employer exploiting their employees for financial gain, a guy who just happens to be a Dom, just trying to help his one of his ex-wives, give his kids the best education they could get - essentially - real life. And that's what I look for - romance that looks like real life but with some VERY smexy and dirty man love. And that's what I got and why I really love this author. Just a few issues but boy, I really enjoyed this. LA Witt remains an auto-buy for me.
