More of a 3.5 The pacing on this one was a bit uneven, maybe because of the increased mythology in this one versus the first. But once the forward progress started, I couldn't put this ghost story down.

Spooky for Halloween

This instalment is detailed in terms of Mattie learning how to control her gifts and also developing her back story.
Not sold on the love interest(s) though.

I was seriously disappointed at the end of this book, but only because I did not realize that this was the second in the series, and had just been released in January. I really do hope that Ms. Baker writes quickly, as I'm anxious to see how Mattie's situation turns out.

I loved this book just as much as the first. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to know what happens next. I have started books 3 because I love this series soooo much. Mattie Hathaway and her friends are great characters with a great story line. I can't wait to see this as a movie! I will go see it for sure.

You can find my review of book one over on my blog www.readbookrepeat.wordpress.com

I really enjoyed where the story started to head in this one. While Mattie did take off to meet up with the Doc after having her heart ripped out by Officer Dan, it opened up a new avenue for this series. She meets the Malones, a family of ghost hunters who work with the Doc on hauntings.

Ending up in New Orleans, Mattie finds herself at a haunted plantation house that she begins to think she really should have stayed away from. As the haunting gets more serious than she was prepared for she begins to learn more about her abilities.

Throw in a bit of a love triangle between Officer Dan and the new guy, Eli Malone; some strange dreams that Mattie feels are prophetic, and a ghost who has slowly been building a power base to rival all others, and you've pretty much got this book in a nut shell.

This is the book that made me realise that this wasn't just going to be another run of the mill, young adult, horror. The story gets deeper in this instalment and the characters get more development which is great. I'm not a fan of the whole love triangle thing, and I honestly couldn't tell you who I was backing in the race, but everything happens for a reason.

So if you're into horror, paranormal, haunting type stories and can deal with a protagonist who is a teenage girl confused about her feelings and with the inability to trust others due to her life thus far, give this series a go. I really enjoyed it.

A good second book

So far I am liking this series. Mattie continues to behave like a young teenager but I am seeing signs of who she may become. I enjoyed meeting the new family, although some of that part didn't really ring true. I've also found that the covers don't fit the books - I expected a lot more horror and less teen angst. There are a few grammatical errors but not too bad. I'll probably read book 3.

***I do my reviews in the form of questions***

What made me pick this book up:
It was the second one in a book I already read.

What did I like about the cover:
I don't really care for this cover, it looks badly edited. Like a b list movie posted. Though I do like b list movies.. Anyway. I like the cover for the first one much more. The only thing this one has is some creep factor

What made me read this book:
I read and really liked the first one. Plus we already had it on audio and it was a fast read.

What did I like the most:
As with the first one, it was creepy and crawly and made me want more. It's a simple and quick read but still succeeded in the creep factor. Officer Dan is still one of my favorite characters, and now there's even more yummy, protective guys to love. I really like the different "types" of ghosts that are in the books as well.

What didn't I like:
Mattie is still kind of whiny. I understand you were in the system, you had crappy homes for a bit. But I'm sorry, I think the whole ghosts thing is kind of top priority. Focus on that, not your crappy childhood. At one point, one of the other characters even pointed out how she always focuses on the negative in life, when she has so much good going for her.
This quote right here says so much as to what I'm talking about...
“I’m a screwed up mess that no one can ever love, not really. Why did I ever let myself hope I could find a little happiness? Pointless.”

Would I read the rest of the series/more from this author?
Eh, yeah probably. They're quick enough reads, but I don't think I would spend money on buying them. They probably aren't anything I'll ever read again. I think I found them on kindle unlimited so I might do it that way. So I will probably read the rest eventually

I mostly liked it. Creepy and quick. I think if it was any longer of a book, I wouldn't want to read it. Because it's short I don't feel like it's a waste of time. And that's why I gave it a 4 star. Because it is a quick read.

“According to him, people who can see ghosts the way I can are meant to be reapers after they die. Reapers help souls get from this plane to the next by navigating through The Between, a place of shades and horrors that want to consume the energy of the newly freed soul. That’s why I can see ghosts and open a doorway to The Between.” ― Apryl Baker, The Ghost Files 2

I remember writing a review for this but once again it isn't here. So frustrating!!! Especially as it was quite awhile ago that I read it.

Obviously I enjoyed it cause I gave it 4 stars but can't remember what I wrote about it. Had to re-read it cause my review wasn't here to refresh my memory before I read the latest one which came out recently.

So a few quick thoughts after my re-read. I am enjoying the story but I am even more confused than Mattie about her romantic prospects. There was Jake, but then not, ditto for Eric and Mason (who was seriously a non starter so why is he even there?). There is Dan but Mattie doesn't feel that way about him, but then maybe she does, but then that is a no go again. And now we have Eli. Stop. Seriously just stop introducing hot new guys who connect with Mattie then replacing them with more hot new guys who connect with Mattie. It is giving me whiplash. I was happy in the first book that there was no romance between Dan & Mattie and was hoping he would turn out to be her brother. But then in this one they seem like maybe they will develop feeling for one another and I was ok with that because they are super cute together and so close. But then that whole Dan/Meg dating behind her back and lying to her about it thing happens and it is very confusing especially as he was giving very mixed signals to Mattie (he almost kisses her at her birthday party, he is clearly jealous of Eli yet he is dating Meg and wants to be with her). I was totally on Mattie's side with her reaction (even tho it was would have been an over reaction for someone else it fit for her given her upbringing and life experiences). That she was able to open up to Dan and trust him after her past was really special and he just spat in the face of her trust. I was so angry on Mattie's behalf - not because they were dating but because they hid it from her and Meg lied to her about it and that is what Mattie was most upset about too. I love Mary and I love the relationship between Mary & Mattie. At least she has one person she can totally count on. It looks to me like Eli is going to be her new love interest but I can't bring myself to care because of the revolving door love interests. Plus the only 2 I felt had a real connection with Mattie were Dan & Eric (poor Eric I will miss you even though you were dead the whole time I knew you.)
