The synopsis was incredibly interesting to me but once I got into the book it was really tough to keep reading. The character development is lacking and really causes the book to drag. I couldn't really connect with any of the characters and that, coupled with the lack of action made this a boring read for me.
Roth uses an interesting concept of mixing family history with alternative historical events. The sense of dread and strong emotion this book elicited was, at times, overwhelming but kept me reading.

I'm unsure whether to give it 1 or 2 stars. It was a 3-4 star for parts of the book, but the two last chapters just made me angry. It made me feel like there was no point to having read it. The conflict is resolved through clipouts of newspaperarticles, which is then followed by the same things being mentioned in the articles, only seen through the lens of our main character. Kind of. I didn't feel like there was a conclusion on a characterlevel, although there was a shitty one on a plot level. I'm kinda angry i read it now tbh. Maybe the HBO series did a better job.
