Ten years ago DCI Jack Logan caught a notorious child killer, nicknamed Mr Whisperer by the press. Although it was the biggest case of his career, it left him with a drinking problem, nightmares and a broken marriage. When he gets called up to the Highlands to help with a case involving a missing boy the similarities between the new case and Mr Whisperer are too many for Jack to ignore, but could it really be possible he caught the wrong man a decade ago?

I've seen a few good reviews of the DCI Logan series, and do love a good British crime thriller (especially to listen to), so decided to take the plunge. As always I like to start at the beginning, and I'm glad I did. I think there's a lot to learn about Jack in this book that will be key to his character developmet over the series. Although he is a flawed character, I liked him. He came across as being hard working, good at his job and respectful of his colleagues which is a character trait often missing in some crime thrillers.

The plot for this one is well written, I must admit that I didn't see the ending coming but when it all unfolded it made perfect sense. There are some aspects of this that are quite graphic and may be challenging for some readers. That said I didn't feel it was unnecessarily bloody or grotesque, rather that the author portrayed the horror of what was happening.

The pacing is exactly what it needs to be, there is plenty happening in the investigation to keep readers interested, without moving at such a pace as to leave details out or feel rushed.

I was very happy with this for an opening novel in a series, and am looking forward to the next one.

The pacing was good, but the plot was just too much, and I didn't care for the main character. Between the serial killer and the grizzled cop who flaunts the rules, this book felt like a lot of cliches mashed up together.

A good introduction to the series - will read more!

Loved the lead character and the dialogue. Story was great but with some definite flaws.

I really liked this book! I had most everything figured out at least a few pages (if not whole chapters) before Logan did, but while that's usually really annoying, I found that I was having fun cheering Logan and Sinead on as they tried to figure out what was going on. I enjoyed myself, liked all of the characters, and am thoroughly looking forward to reading the next books.
