I would probably give this about 3 1/2 stars. It wasn't bad, but it felt really young, for lack of a better word. Almost like it was written by a child, and the things a child would think was cool. Or what an adult imagined a child would think is cool.

The story was good enough to keep me reading, though, and I will most likely read the next book in the series when it comes out, so there you have it. Not great, but not bad either.

The story is interesting and has researched some good science/technology to base it's characters and their powers on. My 12 year old is really enjoying the series...so much he stole book 2 from my nightstand where we read at night and has been reading all day Saturday instead of playing video games. I call that a win!

4 stars only for some annoying repetition of the phrase "Got it" and downplaying/stereotyping the teenagers. Other than those minor points, it does not lag and the plot is interesting.

I have had this book on my TBR for a long while and I'm happy to have finally gotten around to it. Sadly though, the book didn't catch my interest. I had hope in the begging but it didn't last long until I was almost bored with it.

This book was recommended to me as something fun to read. I thought it was horrible.

The story included just about every stereotypical bad high school story plot point *spoilers below* - Michael gets stuffed in lockers by big bad mean bullies and the principal won't help him; he had a big crush on the prettiest cheerleader, who, voila, happens to also have special electric powers; his best friend/sidekick is a fat and socially inept genius kid; in the course of the adventure, he ends up befriending the bullies who were before stuffing him in lockers - they are only bullies because they had horrible childhoods, but are really not such bad guys deep down; cheerleader has a long lost twin; Michael ends up dating the cheerleader. Bet NO ONE could have seen that coming.

Some of these story points or variations have been used by other authors many times before - it is possible to incorporate them tactfully, but it appears that Richard Paul Evans is not capable of applying such literary grace. You can see "plot twists" coming from a mile away. The prose in general was just not good, with especially atrocious dialogue. The plot moving devices implemented here reminded me of stories written by second graders - completely devoid of subtlety, tact, or any cleverness to speak of.

To those comparing this to Harry Potter, I must point out that this book isn't at all about magic for one, and, more importantly, JK Rowling's story-telling abilities are light years beyond this book.

Grand adventure. I can see this one being very popular with middle school kids. Something electric about it. Of course, it's the beginning of a series, but they've got their Electroclan together to face anything now.

Very nice to read a teenage favorite again! This has got a lot of Percy Jackson vibes. Love it.

I highly recommend this book for young YA fans of scifi. Evans does a great job of creating young heroes that act like 15 yr olds and he keeps it clean. I look forward to reading more about Michael Vey.

I remember reading this when I was like 13 and loving it and I’m 25 now and still enjoyed it. It could be a little cringe at times but overall it’s a fun read
