I remember hearing about this book (or was it the miniseries?) when I was a kid, so when I was looking through the stacks of used books while on vacation in Maine, I couldn't pass it up. Especially when the binding was worn white from the sun and it had that nice worn-in feel. Anyway, to the actual contents. I really liked this book. It has been a long time since I read any sort of saga. A lot of time passes during the book and, as one reviewer comments, everything, simply everything, happens. I was a little sad when I finished last night. I think I miss the characters!

Excellent summer reading.

Absolutely stunning novel — following generations of a family — the characters draw you in and make you want to follow their lives — this is one of the best books I’ve read in my life - I enjoyed it just as much 28 years later as a re read . Highly recommend.

Beautiful vistas and totally engaging. However, I did get mired down in some of the especially "romancey" parts. That being said, I couldn't put it down and am glad to be done so I can sleep again. Only three stars because I guess I wanted it to say more, but maybe I just expected too much. It is a beautifully written romance novel, certainly exceptional for the genre, just not quite as ... something ... as I wanted it to be.
