I strongly related to the struggle of cultural identity, but found it difficult to keep up with the eight different storylines throughout the novel and distinguish the characters and their voices.

I would’ve preferred a focus on one daughter/mother relationship, as the 8 characters and all of their respective divorces lost me early on and never cleared up.

I do not tend to enjoy books with multiple perspectives, and I struggled with this one; not only did it contain several perspectives, but it jumped throughout different time periods and settings as well. I thought the writing was quite beautiful and I did enjoy how all of the perspectives tied in to one another. Overall, I gave this 3.5/5 stars - rounded up to 4/5.

Excellent Book! Just finished this last night--how interesting. It discusses the lives of four Chinese women who have immigrated to America and the lives of there American born daughters.

Tbh never finished this.
I did not like that each chapter is a diff story idk could do it but I wanted to like it bc it’s a classic. Let me know if I was doing wrong.

Had important information about Asian American culture

I think my expectations were set higher than they should’ve been because I’ve heard about this book my whole life. It was good, the way it’s told vignette-style is cool, but sometimes keeping up with which character’s POV I was in was a little challenging. It reminded me of a long version of some very good literary short stories I’ve read, that’s the best way I can describe it.

If I had actually read this, I might have rated it higher. I know people love it. I listened to it, and didn't have a copy to refer to, so the different stories/sections didn't transition well. But the story telling was poignant and beautiful. I felt for the women as they worked through all the challenges and misunderstandings and had their expectations met or violated. We can all resonate with those types of painful life experiences.
