Nice stories but reads as a collection of short stories rather than a family saga with connecting threads. Interesting perspective of early 20th century China

Moving. The various tales of immigrants and their first generation daughters struck a chord in my heart.

I started reading this book expecting something completely different, something much more similar to all of the references made to it in pop culture. What I got instead was an incredible dose of appreciation for my own mother, and mothers everywhere. I will never again take for granted that I speak the same language as my mother, Joy Luck Club really impressed on me just how much of a difference that makes in relationships.
I did have a hard time following who was who, I felt like the layout of the “plots” confused me a little, I would highly recommend keeping a notebook nearby and jotting down whose story belonged to who, just for clarity sake.
The ending was absolutely beautiful, this book is an easy read and can be done in a week, and the way it finishes is completely worth it.

Asian immigrant lives of 4 mothers & daughter, past/present generational gap.
Sentimental & relatable, cried at the reunion of the girl & her long lost sisters

read it in starts and stops, which made it somewhat hard to follow. but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I liked how the characters’ experiences differed greatly from my own. Chinese-American women of my parents’ generation reconciling their personal histories with those of their mothers. At the same time, the book was slower than what I normally read, and I struggled to keep the different narrators’ stories straight.
