An interesting depiction of mother-daughter and, in general, women's relationships in a Chinese-American community. A core theme seems to be devotion and sacrifice, which is shown in a powerful and emotional way in all of these stories. Of course, migration and cultural identity are prominent issues as well, and Tan deals with this by allowing her characters to speak about their dreams and experiences as first- or second-generation migrants, and how these experiences influence their identity and views on life and loved ones. It is the combination and inextricable interlinking of these themes of identity, love, and sacrifice that make the novel so captivating; it is the theme of loss and recovery that makes it truly special.
