I liked this book—I enjoyed all the stories rooted in Chinese history, generational trauma, childhood, womanhood, and the pain woven into the relationship between mother and daughter. But I had to stop reading it about halfway through. Perhaps it was because I was in a reading slump and tried to force myself to keep going but couldn’t in the end. Or maybe it was because the book started to feel repetitive and lacked a clear sense of direction. I’m not entirely sure.

I read this in college. It was one of the extra readings for the final exam, I chose this, and I have never regretted that decision.
This was still so good. I really adore the whole story. It is a page-turning and engaging from the first chapter story about an immigrant female group of friends and their daughters.
Each story was somehow equally funny and tragic, and I really have to check more stories from this author.

I really liked this read 🥹 it was a journey to read stories across generations, and I especially enjoyed reading all the mothers’ stories and hardships. As the author shapes relationships between mother and daughter, I can’t help but think of my own relationship with my mom and how her past experiences inform the way she parented and supported me. It was a bit difficult to track the characters since the stories jump timelines, but probably because I was reading it on my Kindle and didn’t annotate the book. I can’t wait to watch the movie!
I really enjoyed the variety of stories about the Chinese immigrant experience, which was eyeopening for me. However, it was hard to differentiate each character and remember what happened to whom as they were all written in first person. I was wishing I had a chart to guide me!
