Couldn't get into it. I loved learning about interesting cultural elements and what it was like immigrating from China or being raised by Chinese immigrants and the differences in generations. And of course I loved all the SF touches like the 30 Stockton and Waverly street. But overall I found it hard to tell who was who and keep the story lines straight with the jumping between characters and I never really connected with any of them to really care and want to keep going.

i quite liked the book’s intergenerational aspect and it’s exploration of mother-daughter relationships intertwined with culture. however personally it was just a little too disjointed to properly get into.

A good book but didn't impact me as much as other books have. I guess I wasn't as sympathetic to the daughters' perspectives. And I kept forgetting who was who despite the character sheet at the beginning.Though the last chapters were some of the best.

This is not your normal story flow. This is a compilation of stories from mothers and daughters. We get 2 each for the 4 sets of mothers and daughters. Many times I had to flip back to the list of which daughters belonged to which mothers and then which previous stories were which character's. So, it was a bit confusing but other than that, it was very interesting how different the Chinese culture of the mothers and the American-Chinese culture of the daughters caused tension and misunderstandings. I am curious to see how this is translated in the movie.
