I loved this book! My dad’s been telling me I should read it for years, and I procrastinated. He was right, it’s great!
I will note, the characters say “Good God” and “By God” a lot. If you turned when they said it into a drinking game, you’d quickly be drunk.

It was fine. I’ll still read more of Clavell’s work, but I didn’t feel anything special about this book aside from that I still think James Clavell is an excellent writer.

A masterpiece.

Riveting and ambitious, Tai-Pan plunges readers into the cutthroat world of 19th-century Hong Kong, where trade, power, and survival are at stake. James Clavell masterfully blends historical events with gripping drama, bringing the rise of the British Empire and the opium trade to life. The characters, especially Dirk Struan, are larger than life, and the rich cultural backdrop adds depth to the high-stakes tension. A page-turner for historical fiction enthusiasts!

Thoroughly enjoyed. Partly, I think because I had lived in HK. I found the ending a little bit too sudden and pat.
